To testify, that's
what soul music was basically all about, but instead of testifying about Jesus
they testified about love and in doing so produced more sweat that a basketball
team. This was southern gospel jacked up with rhythm & blues, rock & roll,
funk and adrenaline. It was not music you listened to sitting down.
The James Brown Show Live at the Apollo In Person at the Whiskey a Go Go Live at the Fillmore West
Recorded at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem on October 24, 1962. This is James Brown as he was just becoming a star. Live performance was what he was all about, he was doing about 300 shows per year at the time, and this captures him at his best.
Born in South Carolina in 1933, Brown was 29 at the time of this show. He'd already been performing for 10 years and was billed as the 'Hardest Working Man in Show Business", but was still mostly known only in the south. This tour played New York and Boston but most of the other dates were in Texas, Mississippi & Virginia. His signature tunes, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)", both came out in 1965 and made him a national star, the "Godfather of Soul". Recorded in 1966 at the Los Angeles nightclub Whisky a Go Go on Sunset Strip. Redding plays soul classics such as "Respect" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" along with British Invasion hit "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". He's got a band behind him pumping out 3 saxophones, 2 trumpets and a trombone along with the drums and guitars.
Born in Georgia in 1941, Redding was 24 when he recorded this performance. He would die in a plane crash in just over a year. His biggest hit, "(Sittin on) the Dock of the Bay", was recorded just a few days before his death. That song, along with his performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, made him a national star.
Recorded March 5-7, 1971, at Bill Graham's rock music hall, the Fillmore West. She sings her big soul hit "Respect" along with some mainstream rock & roll songs. Also included is a duet with Ray Charles, who just happened to be in the audience, on "Spirit In The Dark".
The "Queen of Soul" was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Raised in Detroit, she signed her first record deal at age 14 while singing in her father's gospel choir. She recorded "Respect", written by Otis Redding, in 1967 and the rest is history. That was followed by a string of hits in the late 60's and best selling albums through the early 70's.
